Taroudant is a city in the Sous Valley in southern Morocco. The town is known as the "Grandmother of Marrakesh" because it looks like a smaller Marrakesh with its surrounding ramparts. In the sixteenth century, the Saadiens dynasty briefly used Taroudant as a capital, before it moved its royal seat onwards to Marrakesh. Today, the city has the feel of a small fortified market town on a caravan route.

The rapid expansion of Islam brought classical rug traditions from China, India, Central Asia, Persia and Anatolia to Northern Africa. Skoura is the first stop on the 1,000 kasbahs road between Ouarzazate and Tafilalet. Since then, several populations have followed one another, including the Arab tribes from the Tafilalet, making Skoura an Arab territory in the Berber country.
Ouarzazate has stood at the edge of the Sahara desert for hundreds of years. A city of palm trees, sandy streets and blocky, fort-like buildings, this is the Morocco seen in a hundred movies. The name Ouarzazate comes from the Amazigh for ‘quiet place’, and compared to many of its fellow Moroccan towns and cities, there is a certain calm to be found here.
Ait Ben Haddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and several major films have been shot there, including Gladiator, The Mummy... It is situated on a hill along the Ounila river, it is known for its kasbahs and was one of the most important fortress strongholds on the old Salt Road caravan routes, where traders brought slaves, gold, ivory and salt from sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech and beyond. Most of the town’s inhabitants now live in a more modern village, at the other side of the river, however, ten families still live within the ksar. Once in Ait Ben Haddou, you have the choice to have lunch, or visit the village first with a local guide. Around 3 pm we will drive back to Marrakech.After that visit Telouet Kasbah, which was once the palatial residence and headquarters of the powerful Glaoui tribe.
